TxDOT: Snow prompts call for reinforcements

TxDOT calls in reinforcements, explains the nuts and bults of its efforts

TxDOT spokeswoman Cynthia Northup White helps explain how, exactly, crews go about clearing the roads in the Dallas-area. She said that the Dallas district has 16 snow plows, and the Tarrant district has 14. Dallas-side has two bladers and over 120 pieces of equipment — a mix, she says, of 6- and 10-year trucks with spreader boxes, liquid deicing trucks, safety trucks, snow plpows, bladers, and more. Operating those rigs are more than 200 workers across the district, which includes a lot territory: Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Kaufman , Navarro and Rockwall counties.

They have been “working 12-hour shifts, 24/7, since late Monday evening/early Tuesday morning,” White said. “This latest shift started at midnight, which is approximately when the snow began. It has been snowing for a good 6 hours with more to come. The strategy is to start with priority one routes clearing the right lane (followed by application of sand, sand/salt mixture and/or liquid choride mag or meltdown 20 (both de-icing agents). The challenge has been once plowing started the snow kept coming. We have been in areas plowiing multiple times.”

Some of the sites with multiple runs have included the High Five, I-30, I-35, Loop 12, Spur 408, I-635, she said.

“We already have mobilized much of our Snow and Ice plans resulting in shifting and targeting resources (manpower, equipment, materials) from other areas such as Amarillo, Altanta, Brownwood and Childress Districts along with resources from Houston, Waco and Paris Distircts. We are currently mobilizing more snow plows from other districts such as Lubbock and additional snow plows from Amarillo. The total additonal snow plows is 44 (for both districts) with an additional 50 manpower.”

How are the roads to be treated or plowed selected?

“Priority routes are primarily determined by traffic volumes so Interstates, US Highways and State Highways along with bridges, overpasses and ramps are priority,” she said.

The 19th Annual 610WIP Wing Bowl was held in the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia Friday morning.

Meet The Real Housewives of Miami

Bravo’s highly successful franchise is heading off to a brand new city, looking for the same drama viewers have come to expect from middle-aged women. Meet the six hot mamas of “The Real Housewives of Miami“. The newest installment of the Housewives franchise promises to add a unique flavor as the show goes inside this cultural hot spot. According to the press release, the series will follow six of Miami’s most connected and influential women as they live their lives to the fullest in this sunny city where the party never stops.

Personally, I don’t care about all the mumbo jumbo and just want confirmation that these ladies will bring on the cray cray and ridiculous catfights. The ladies of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” certainly set the bar high for a new Housewives series launch. Those women brought it and then some. Mind you, we could’ve watched them all shop for 13 episodes and it would’ve been more fun than that dreckitude called “The Real Housewives of D.C.“. Unfortunately for the women of MIA, they’re going to be compared to Lisa Vanderpump, Camille Grammer, Kyle Richards and company. The one thing I’m certain these ladies can do better than the BH ladies is correctly pronounce “salsa”. Seriously Kim Richards, WTF?!?!?

You can watch all the Miami drama unfold when the newest addition to the family premieres on Tuesday, Feb. 22 on Bravo. Fun fact. Originally the show was a stand alone show titled “Miami Social Club“, but for one reason or another, it became the seventh installment of the Housewives franchise. Check out each lady’s bios below and see what first impression they give off.

Adriana DeMoura-Sidi

This Brazilian bombshell is a full-time mom and a highly respected art curator who is always on the go. Coming off a traumatic divorce, Adriana wasted no time meeting her new fiancée, Fredric. Still her relationship is always on the rocks, as Adrianna’s flirtatious ways and fiery personality seem to get her in trouble and leave her peers gossiping.

First Impression: Oooh, a flirty gorgeous Brazilian divorcee who’s already engaged. Sounds like trouble great TV. Plus she’s always the subject of the gossip. Could she be the one that everyone hates? On a side note, she really is gorgeous. Unless she’s a heinous beyotch, I can see myself on Team Adriana.

Alexia Echevarria

This “Cuban Barbie” holds the pulse of Miami’s Latin culture. As the executive editor of Venue Magazine, Alexia spotlights the latest fashion trends as well as up-and -coming Latin film and TV stars. Alexia loves to spend time at her Miami Beach home with her husband, Herman, and admits she is at times more of an older sister than a disciplinarian to her two sons from a previous marriage.

First Impression: Hopefully as the editor of a magazine, she isn’t crazy like that Devorah chic from Social Magazine. I wonder what trouble she gets into by being an older sister to her sons. She’s “cool mom” not your average mom, like Amy Poehler. BTW, who calls themselves Cuban Barbie. Can someone say plastic?

Cristy Rice

As a Miami native who is beyond proud of her roots, Cristy’s sassy Latina flair is evident in everything she does. Recently divorced from NBA superstar Glen Rice, Cristy has entered a new phase of her life, being single and living out loud. When she’s not out dancing at night or dealing with relationship drama, Cristy’s life is jam-packed with being a single mom to her three children and running her own clothing store.

First Impression: A recent NBA divorcee who owns her own clothing store. Sounds like Khloe Kardashian in ten years. “Sassy Latina flair”? Is that a euphemism for hot-tempered beyotch. I surely hope so. PS. Those heels are sick. Cristy is sure one sexy MILF.

Larsa Pippen

This wife of NBA superstar Scottie Pippen shares the unofficial title of “Hottest NBA Wife” with her friend Cristy Rice. A snarky Lebanese beauty, Larsa boasts that she’s successful at everything she does, including playing wife and mother to her four young kids. When she’s not busy turning her three little boys into star athletes, shopping for her one-year-old princess, or firing nannies, Larsa is happy to spend a little time on herself.

First Impression: Ummm, I already don’t like her. Sounds like one mean egotistical delusional woman. She sounds like Camille Grammer on speed. For her bio to consist of anecdotes like “firing nannies” and “snarky Lebanese beauty”, this could be the one, bloggers and the media hate. PS. honey, you’re not all that.

Lea Black

Deeply loved, occasionally uncompromising, but universally respected, this Texas native is leaving an indelible mark on Miami. Married to one of the top criminal defense attorneys in the country, Roy Black, and raising their 9-year-old son, Lea has a reputation as a community leader. She raised money for President Barack Obama during his 2008 presidential campaign as well as many other local Florida politicians, and spends a majority of her time working towards the success of her own beloved charity.

First Impression: Oh look, someone brought their grandma. I’m such a bitch. In all honesty, she sounds like the Dina Manzo / Adrienne Maloof of the bunch. In other words, the mature one with little or no drama. She’s just there to play the matriarch of the bunch and give awkward facial expressions.

Marysol Patton

Miami native Marysol Patton is one of Miami’s most sought-after women both socially and professionally. Being divorced for 10 years has allowed her to put all her energy into creating and running one of the premiere public relations firms in town, the Patton Group. Armed with her bedazzled iPhone and a hot female staff, this PR maven definitely knows how to throw a party for her A-list clients. When Marysol’s not working, she finds time to hang with her mother, Elsa, a character in her own right. Elsa considers herself a “seer,” not a psychic and she’s a hot commodity amongst A-listers looking for spiritual guidance.

First impression: I kinda zoned out halfway through her bio. She sounds way to put together to be on a Housewives show. Being in PR, I really hope she comes off well on the show. If she’s a polarizing figure, she runs the risk of alienating a lot of her A-list clientele. Love that she hangs out with her mom, who’s described as “a character in her own right”. Sounds juicy, doesn’t it?

So what do you think of the “Real Housewives of Miami” cast? Sounds promising. I predict, it’ll fall in line somewhere in between Beverly Hills and DC. Unless one of the wives actually sleeps with another wife’s husband, Beverly Hills will claim the best first season of the franchise with Atlanta a close second.

Scottie Pippen’s Wife & More Gear Up For “Real Housewives of Miami”, “Real Housewives of New York” Pushed Back!

Well what do we have here?  Just as I was getting uber excited for the Feb. 15th return of the “Real Housewives of New York” and all of Kelly Bensimon‘s candyland ass fairytales, we learn that the show has been pushed back.  And replaced by “The Real Housewives of Miami”.  Who knew this was even in the making?

Deets on which MIA basketball wives are set for the Bravo foolery when you read on…

I guess Bravo heard folks’ pleas about their lack of diversity across the board.  Not just a lack of black folks outside of the basic “Atlanta Housewives,” but a lack of Latinas, Asians, Middle Eastern women, etc.

So, I guess the brand new “Real Housewives of Miami” is Bravo’s answer.  No YBF Chicks.  Surprise, surprise.  But, of course, there’s a few spicy Latinas.

The series premieres February 22nd.  And, now that the network has revealed the six newest stars via press release today, here’s the run down of who’s who (pictured left to right):

Alexia Echevarria is the executive editor of Venue magazine, where she covers fashion and celebrity culture. She lives on Miami Beach with her husband Herman and has two sons from a previous marriage.

Marysol Patton (who supposedly pitched this show) is a Miami native who runs her own PR firm, the Patton Group. A divorcee, Patton is known for throwing bashes around town and loves to spend time with her mother, Elsa, who considers herself a “seer” and offers spiritual guidance people in town.

Larsa Pippen is married to basketball star Scottie Pippen and was known as the “Hottest NBA wife.” A mother of four, Pippen boasts that she’s successful at everything she does.

Cristy Rice was recently divorced from NBA star Glen Rice. The show will follow her single life as she juggles business (she owns a clothing store) and being a single mom.

Lea Black has a 9-year-old son with her lawyer husband. A strong supporter of President Obama, the Texas-born Housewife is invested in her own charitable endeavors.

Adriana DeMoura-Sidi is fiery and flirtatious and … newly engaged. Her personality lands her in trouble and the subject of much gossip among the ladies.

Both Scottie Pippen‘s and Glen Rice‘s (ex)wives?  Well this ought to be interesting.  Interestingly, word on the street back in March was that Larsa, Marysol, and Lea were all pitching a different show to Bravo tentatively called “The Miami Social Club.”  Guess Bravo decided to pull a switcharoo and induct them into the Housewives franchise instead.

And if you’re wondering WTF is going to happen to the “NYC Housewives,” (their new promo pic is above), word has it they’re pushed back till spring.  These Miami chicks are replacing them.  Weird since the promos for their Feb. 15th premiere date have been running all week on Bravo.

The folks over at ChicagoNow.com and Entertainment Weekly say that they viewed the first episode of “NYC Housewives,” and it was underwhelming at best. But not as boring as “The Real Housewives of D.C.”  Bethanny is only going to appear minimally on the show, as she has her own show, “Bethanny Ever After,” airing soon on the network.

There are two new housewives, and not much drama.  Especially coming fresh off the fireworks of “Beverly Hills” and “Atlanta.”

Why is the Ocean Salty?

Why is the ocean salty’ is the hottest trending topic as of today. Thanks to Snooki who explains why she hates the oceans and why is the ocean salty. From this weeks Jersey Shore episode, Snooki had a boyfriend named Jeff. Her short-lived beau wanted to take a dip in the ocean, but she informed him : “I f—in’ hate the ocean. Too much whale sperm. Everybody Google it, because that’s why the water is salty. F—in’ whale sperm.”

Imagine, just because Snooki said to Google it… many people are googling it. And she even said that the ocean is salty because of all the ‘f—-ng whale sperm’ and that is why she doesn’t want to go in the ocean, because of all the sperm. But don’t worry though, the ocean is not salty because of whale sperm, that’s just wrong. According to sources, as water flows in rivers, it picks up small amounts of mineral salts from the rocks and soil of the river beds. This very-slightly salty water flows into the oceans and seas. The water in the oceans only leaves by evaporating (and the freezing of polar ice), but the salt remains dissolved in the ocean – it does not evaporate. So the remaining water gets saltier and saltier as time passes.
why is the ocean salty
The salinity (salt content) of ocean water varies. The oceans and seas contain roughly 5 x 10 16 tons of salts. One cubic foot of average sea water contains 2.2 pounds of salt. The oceans are about 3.5% salt (by weight). Salinity is generally reported in terms of parts per thousand (abbreviated o/oo), the number of pounds of salt per 1,000 pounds of water; the average ocean salinity is 35 o/oo

The saltiest water is in the Red Sea and in the Persian Gulf, which have a salinity of about 40 o/oo (due to very high evaporation rates and low fresh water influx). The least salty seas are in the polar regions, where both melting polar ice and a lot of rain dilute the salinity.

Now you know why the ocean is salty.

Islamic Socialism Political System

A number of Muslim leaders who relate Islam and Socialism in the political system usually use the term Islamic Socialism to describe the system. They combine the principles of Socialism with the spirituality of Islam in the system. Muslim socialists consider the principles of Socialism, such as redistribution of wealth and equality, are in accordance with the teachings of Prophet Muhammad and the Holy Qur’an.

Ab? Dharr al-Ghif?r?,
a Companion of Prophet Mu?ammad, is believed as the founder of Islamic Socialism. He protested against the accumulation of wealth by the ruling class during ‘Uthm?n’s caliphate and urged the equitable redistribution of wealth. A number of Orientalists also believe that there is a relationship between Islamic economics and communism, such as the idea of riba and zakat.

Another advocate of Islamic Socialism is Moammar Gadhafi of Libya. He declared Libya an Islamic Socialism country in 1969 and outlined his principles in the Green Book.

Other proponents of Islamic Socialism include:

Sebelumnya Alfred Riedl telah melakukan pertemuan dengan Okto. Pada pertemuan itu mantan pemain Persitara itu kepada Riedl menjelaskan alasan kenapa ia kabur dari pelatnas sejak Kamis (27/1) malam itu.

Salah satu alasan kenapa pemain berusia 20 tahun itu adalah mendapatkan tekanan dari manajemen Sriwijaya FC. Jika tidak menuruti Okto harus mendapatkan konsekuensi pribadi dari klub.

Punxsutawney Phil Groundhog Day 2011 Prediction: An Early Spring

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. — The world’s most famous groundhog predicted an early spring Wednesday, but wasn’t willing to go out on a limb to forecast whether the nearby Pittsburgh Steelers will win Sunday’s Super Bowl. Punxsutawney Phil emerged just after dawn on Groundhog Day to make his 125th annual weather forecast in front of a smaller-than-usual crowd who braved muddy, icy conditions to hear his handlers reveal that he had not seen his shadow.

Including Wednesday’s forecast, Phil has seen his shadow 98 times and hasn’t seen it just 16 times since 1887, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s Inner Circle, which runs the event. There are no records for the remaining years, though the group has never failed to issue a forecast.

Punxutawney-Phil

Punxutawney Phil

Two years ago, Phil’s forecast also acknowledged the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Super Bowl XLIII win the night before. This year, Sunday’s game was mentioned in the forecast but no winner was predicted between the Steelers and the Green Bay Packers, who meet in Dallas for Super Bowl XLV.

“The Steelers are going to the Super Bowl,” Mike Johnson, vice president of the Inner Circle, said just before the forecast was read, drawing cheers from the clearly partisan crowd gathered on Gobbler’s Knob, a tiny hill in this borough of about 6,100 residents some 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh.

The Groundhog Day celebration is rooted in a German superstition that says if a hibernating animal casts a shadow on Feb. 2, the Christian holiday of Candlemas, winter will last another six weeks. If no shadow was seen, legend said spring would come early.

In reality, Pennsylvania’s prophetic rodent doesn’t see much of anything. The result is actually decided in advance by 14 members of the Inner Circle, who don tuxedos and top hats for the event.

The celebration usually draws 10,000 to 15,000 spectators when it falls on a weekday, Groundhog club spokesman Luke Webber said. The area was under a winter weather warning and while heavier snows and sleet never materialized, rain falling in about 35-degree temperatures made for a below-average crowd, said Webber, who offered no specific estimate.
